Our approach

Facilitation asks for more than knowledge

Our training brings together psychotherapy, psychedelic science, transpersonal psychology, experiential learning and the ancestral wisdom of Ireland. Effective facilitation needs personal maturity, embodied presence, ethical awareness and the ability to stay grounded in complex and non-ordinary states.

So the programme develops both knowledge and practical capacity. Alongside clinical and scientific perspectives, you explore relational skills, self-awareness, integration, harm reduction and the cultural and spiritual dimensions of psychedelic work.

We don't promote a single model of psychedelic therapy. The aim is to help you develop a thoughtful, responsible and personally integrated way of working.

Science and psychotherapy

Pharmacology, screening, harm reduction and the evidence base, alongside somatic, Jungian, transpersonal and ACT approaches.

Experience and presence

Immersive, supervised practice that builds the capacity to hold space, not theory alone.

Culture and spirit

Nature, ritual and Celtic tradition, held alongside Indigenous perspectives on sacred medicine.

What you will develop

Knowledge, skill and self-awareness, together

Across the three stages you move from understanding psychedelic work to practising it, with supervision at every step.

Theory first. Then practice with confidence.

Every Stage 2 trainee completes Stage 1 first, so the whole group arrives with the same shared foundation, ready for immersive skills training.

Through the programme, you will:

  • Build a strong foundation in psychedelic facilitation theory, ethics and harm reduction
  • Develop practical skills for preparation, holding space and integration
  • Learn from an interdisciplinary faculty spanning psychotherapy, psychiatry, science, somatic practice and transpersonal approaches
  • Work in trauma-informed and embodied ways with non-ordinary states
  • Deepen your self-awareness and understand how your own process shapes the therapeutic space
  • Join a community of practitioners, mentors and peers committed to responsible psychedelic work

Why Inwardbound

Grounded in evidence and in years of legal retreat work

Since 2018 we have supported large numbers of participants through legal psilocybin retreats in the Netherlands. That work gives us a practical understanding of preparation, facilitation, integration and the complexities of non-ordinary states, and it shapes everything we teach.

Interdisciplinary training

Psychotherapy, science, trauma-informed practice and transpersonal approaches, taught by people who work in each.

Experiential learning

Training that develops practical capacity, not theory alone, with supervised practice at Stages 2 and 3.

Established retreat experience

Built from years of facilitating legal psychedelic retreats in the Netherlands. The protocols you learn are the ones we use.

Science and tradition

Contemporary therapeutic approaches held alongside nature-based and Celtic perspectives on this work.

Certification

What completing the programme means

An honest picture of where the field stands, and what an Inwardbound certificate reflects.

There is currently no standardised psychedelic-assisted therapy certification recognised globally or across Europe. The most developed frameworks are the state-licensed psilocybin facilitator models in Oregon and Colorado, and these are region-specific.

Our programme is designed within this emerging field, drawing on best practice from psychedelic research, established therapeutic frameworks and leading training models. Graduates receive certification from Inwardbound reflecting completion of the programme and its requirements.

Completing the full pathway is based on more than attendance:

  • Demonstrated competency
  • Professional conduct
  • Reflective capacity
  • Readiness to work responsibly with people in non-ordinary states

Recognition of prior experience

If you have relevant professional or psychedelic-facilitation training, you may be considered for entry into a later stage. This is assessed individually and, where appropriate, by interview.

Working in the field

Graduates may be considered for roles in legal psychedelic retreat centres, but completing the programme doesn't guarantee work with Inwardbound or any other organisation.

We believe psychedelics are the shared birthright of humanity. We are their custodians, not their owners, and we have a duty to teach others to work with them safely, in service of healing that is open to all, not only the privileged and wealthy.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Not sure which stage is right for you? Book a discovery call or email [email protected]

Do I need to be a therapist or mental health professional to join?

Stage 1 is suitable for mental health professionals, therapists, integration practitioners and others with a serious interest in psychedelic facilitation. Stage 2 welcomes doctors, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychologists, counsellors, healthcare professionals and coaches. Suitability is assessed individually.

Do I need to complete all three stages?

No. The programme is designed as a progressive pathway, and some people choose to complete only Stage 1 or Stage 2. If you want to progress toward supervised facilitation experience, you can apply for Stage 3, but places are very limited and completing Stage 2 does not guarantee one.

Is there screening for Stage 2?

Yes. Every Stage 2 applicant completes a full screening and interview. Your place is confirmed only once screening is approved, so please don't book travel before then.

What is the difference between the two Stage 2 locations?

Both cover the same core curriculum. The Netherlands training is 7 days at an eco-lodge two hours from Amsterdam. Costa Rica is 8 days at Anamaya in Montezuma, including an extra day of rest and reflection. Compare the locations.

Can previous training or experience be recognised?

Applicants with relevant professional experience or previous psychedelic-facilitation training may be considered for recognition of equivalent experience. Entry into later stages is assessed individually and may include an interview.

Does the programme provide an internationally recognised qualification?

No. There is currently no standardised psychedelic-assisted therapy certification recognised globally or across Europe. Graduates receive certification from Inwardbound reflecting completion of the programme and its training requirements. Read more about certification.

Where does the training take place?

Stage 1 is online. Stage 2 is immersive in-person training in the Netherlands or Costa Rica; you choose one. Stage 3 is a supervised apprenticeship within the Inwardbound retreat setting.

How long does the full programme take?

Stage 1 is 60 hours, Stage 2 is 110 hours and Stage 3 is 120 hours. Because Stage 3 is based on supervised apprenticeship and retreat experience, the full pathway usually takes around 2 to 3 years.

Does completing the programme guarantee work with Inwardbound?

No. Graduates may be considered for roles within legal psychedelic retreat settings, but completing the programme does not guarantee employment with Inwardbound or any other organisation.

How do I know which stage is right for me?

Most people begin with Stage 1, which is required before Stage 2. If you have relevant prior training or aren't sure where to start, book a call to talk through your background, experience and goals.
