Education Inwardbound

Psychedelic Assisted Therapy Education Programme

Our Educational Mission Statement

Our mission is to educate people on the safe use of psychedelics in a therapeutic setting, combining cutting edge science and psychotherapy with the ancestral wisdom of Ireland

We believe:

  • that psychedelic-assisted therapy, when done in a safe manner, has the potential to change the world for the better
  • that psychedelics such as psilocybin are the shared birthright of humanity, belong to no-one, and as such by educating others we would like to reach and help as many people as possible
  • that the core value of healing should always be service to others
  • that psychedelics are sacred medicines of the earth, and deserve our respect
  • that we are custodians of these sacred medicines, not their owners, and therefore have a duty to educate others in how to work responsibly with psychedelics in a safe and therapeutic way
  • that psychedelic healing practised in a safe way should be accessible to all, not just the privileged and wealthy. For this reason, we will offering a limited number of scholarships to those from disadvantaged socio-economic or ethnic backgrounds

Pathways to Certification

The legal pathways towards psychedelic-assisted therapy are constantly evolving

Currently, there is no standardized psychedelic-assisted therapy certification which is recognized globally or across Europe.

The most developed regulatory framework exists in Oregon and Colorado in the US, where a state-licensed psilocybin facilitator model has been established. However, this system is region-specific and not internationally standardized.

It is anticipated that broader European or global certification frameworks may emerge in the future.

Inwardbound’s training is designed within the context of an emerging global field. Our programme draws on best practices from leading research, therapeutic frameworks, and established training models. Our facilitator training integrates experiential learning,  evidence-informed approaches, ethical guidelines, and experiential learning to support participants in developing the skills required to safely and responsibly hold space in psychedelic settings.

Graduates receive a certification from Inwardbound, reflecting completion of our training programme, while recognising that certification standards in this field are still evolving. Hopefully, a broader European or global certification framework will emerge in the coming years.

Graduates of the Inwardbound training may be considered for roles within legal psychedelic retreat centres, however it does not guarantee employment with Inwardbound or other organisations. All opportunities are subject to individual assessment, and are determined by Inwardbound or another hiring organisation based on experience, suitability, and organisational fit.

Psychedelic Assisted Therapy Education- Why InwardBound?

  • At InwardBound, our interdisciplinary team of psychotherapists, PhD scientists and holistic therapists believes in weaving together the threads of science and spirituality, knowing that the two ways are one. We work in the broad tradition of Dr Stan Grof – creating a safe container for people to access the wisdom of their own inner healer.
  • We come from a long tradition of psilocybin use in Ireland. Our Celtic ancestors used the wild mushrooms of Northern Europe (Psilocybe Semilanceata) and worked with the patterns of nature for healing and spiritual growth and we continue that land-based ancestral tradition to create a modern context for psilocybin ceremony and reconnection with nature.
  • Since 2018, almost 1000 people have attended our retreats. We are one of the pioneering psilocybin retreats in the world.

Testimonials:

“I’ve just completed the online training and wanted to say how comprehensive and engaging it’s been – such rich material over the past few months. Many thanks to you and especially to everyone involved for the collaboration throughout. What a crew!

The sheer variety of perspectives and ways in which folks are bringing their research/path and insights to life really shone through and inspired!”– Stephen

“This training was so much more than I expected. I learned everything I came here to learn but didn’t expect the deep connections that were a wonderful byproduct of the way the team put together the training. I am so very grateful.”– Karyn

Inwardbound education programme- FAQ

  • All participants who complete the full 7-day training and stage 1 will receive a Certificate of Completion from Inwardbound Institute in Psychedelic Facilitation Skills & Space Holding. To ensure genuine competency, each participant will also be required to complete a written case study following the retreat. This involves holding space for one individual on the retreat and documenting the process, from preparation, intention setting, and the holding container, through to follow-up integration work. This case study will be reviewed by the Inwardbound teaching team as a demonstration of your understanding, embodiment, and readiness to support others. Upon approval, your certificate will be formally issued.
Can I start holding Psychedelic ceremonies or Psychedelic Therapy?

This 7-day training offers a foundational education in psychedelic facilitation, combining cutting-edge science, trauma-informed practices, and wisdom traditions. While it provides essential tools, frameworks, and experience in space holding, it is not a license to begin holding psychedelic ceremonies independently.

We view this stage as the process of a larger journey. To competently and ethically hold space for others in altered states, we strongly encourage all participants to continue their training through our Stage 3 Advanced Certification Pathway. This includes further supervised practice, ongoing mentorship, deeper integration work, and extensive training in risk management, ethics, and diverse facilitation approaches.

In short: This retreat will equip you with the foundational knowledge and experience to deepen your personal practice, assist others in non-psychedelic spaces, and begin your path toward professional facilitation—but further training is essential before guiding others in ceremonial contexts.

When can I fully train and join stage 3?

We are currently in the process of developing Stage 3 of our facilitator training pathway—a more advanced, in-depth Apprenticeship Program designed to support those who have demonstrated skill, integrity, and commitment during the foundational training.

Participants who show competency, self-awareness, and readiness during Stage 1 and Stage 2 may be invited to join the Inwardbound Apprenticeship Program, where they will receive hands-on mentorship, supervised practice, and continued professional development.

Our Stage 3 Apprenticeship programme is not guaranteed for all participants on Stage 2, and depends on capacity and availability of our retreats.

This apprenticeship is designed to prepare facilitators to confidently and ethically hold psychedelic space, and to support them in meeting the legal and professional standards required for facilitation in their specific jurisdiction.

As our field continues to evolve, we aim to support practitioners in becoming fully qualified, well-rounded psychedelic facilitators grounded in both science and soul.

    Why this program?

In a time when psychedelic work is rapidly emerging from the underground into the mainstream, there is a growing need for facilitators who are not only informed by science, but also deeply rooted in integrity, self-awareness, and tradition. The Inwardbound Facilitator Training Program is more than an educational course — it is a transformational journey into becoming a grounded, heart-centered, and capable space-holder for others.

Drawing on over 8 years of experience, with thousands of participants guided through our legal psilocybin retreats in the Netherlands, Inwardbound brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts in psychotherapy, neuroscience, somatic practice, trauma-informed care, transpersonal psychology, and ritual.

What sets us apart is our unique approach — a powerful integration of modern therapeutic modalities with the wisdom of the our Celtic lineage, a deep connection to the land, and a soulful reverence for the psilocybin mushroom as teacher and guide. Our work is grounded in the ancient, while evolving with the future. We believe that true facilitation begins with the self — and as such, our training is as much about inner transformation as it is about outer skill-building.

By undertaking this program, you will:

    • Gain a solid foundation in psychedelic therapy theory and best practices
    • Undergo a guided personal process of healing, self-inquiry, and growth
    • Learn how to hold space in a way that is ethical, embodied, and trauma-informed
    • Connect with a community of peers, mentors, and teachers
    • Become part of an evolving field — with ongoing potential opportunities for apprenticeship and professional development
    • Be prepared to step into this work with the confidence, humility, and care it demandsCertificate upon completion

This is a path for those who feel called — not just to facilitate altered states, but to walk with others through their deepest transformations. If that call is within you, we welcome you to walk this path with us.
